Some food stores (Extra Foods, Save-on-Foods, etc.) have programs where groups can hold a hot dog sale in front of the business and keep some or all of the proceeds. The food store typically donates a few hundred dollars’ worth of food and also provides the barbeque and tools.

As with all Scouting events, youth should attend in full uniform.

Things to remember to do before the event:

  • Book the event early. Approach the facility and see what requirements they have, i.e. waiver, insurance, exactly what they supply and at what cost, etc.
  • We need someone with FoodSafe training.
  • Apply to the Fraser Health Authority for a “Temporary Food Premises Application”. The inspector for the Sapperton area is Ashleen Nadan, Nadan, Ashleen.Nadan@fraserhealth.ca The form says to submit the application 14 days ahead of the event.
  • The facility will likely have a waiver to sign. This needs to be signed by Iqbal Lalany at the BCY Service Centre, and he needs to see the approved Temporary Health Permit before he will approve and sign the waiver. The Scout office always sends the waiver and a copy of any insurance papers directly to the facility and not to the Scouter applying for it. If you want a copy, you need to get it directly from the facility.
  • Have sign-up sheets in each Section or use ScoutsTracker to manage this.
  • Develop and print a pricing schedule.
  • Confirm what the food store will supply, and what we need to bring.
    • BBQ
    • Propane
    • BBQ tools
    • Tables
    • Coolers
    • Condiments
    • Hot dogs/buns/etc.
    • Pop/water/juice
    • Napkins
    • Tablecloths
    • Ice

Things to remember to do or bring on the day of the event:

  • Temporary Health Permit.
  • Anything in the list above that the store is not providing.
  • Cashbox.
  • Signs detailing pricing.
  • Signs saying what the event is for.
  • Pens and tape.
  • Pop-up shelter.
  • The 12th New Westminster banner.
  • Rope to hold the banner.
  • Advertising literature for Scouting in New Westminster.
