The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is an all-Section event and is usually held in the fall (usually late September) at a location like Sapperton Landing Park. As part of our community service, we give back by cleaning up local parks or waterways.
When the event is registered on the The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup website and we track and submit a record of what we collected, free crests can be requested.
Everyone should bring a water bottle, bring their own gloves, and dress for the weather.
The Group will arrange for disposable gloves and garbage bags.
Things to remember to do before the event
- Assign someone to register the event with The Great Canadian Shoreline website.
- When a cleanup is done in Metro Vancouver Regional Park, a “Special Event / Use” permit is required. There is an Indemnification Agreement in the form but because Metro Vancouver has signed the Scouts Canada Indemnification Agreement, we don't need to get it signed by Doug Smith at the Scout office. The Vancouver Aquarium arranges insurance through the City, so Michelle Yu at the Scout office does not need to provide a copy.
- Camping and Outdoor Activity Application (COAA) form is not required for this event. Even though the COAA form is not required, the Sections should still have a safety plan in place (meeting place, explain dangers to the kids, Section leads sign youth in and out, first aid, etc.)
- Depending on the City this is done in, some supplies can be requested. Coquitlam will supply latex gloves and garbage bags. New Westminster is largely unresponsive.
- The Sapperton Residents' Association has garbage pickers, tongs, and buckets that can be borrowed.
Things to bring on the day (some are in the locker)
- Small white garbage bags.
- Large black garbage bags.
- Box of latex or rubber gloves.
- Hand sanitizer.
- First-aid kit.
- Bring the Shoreline Cleanup evaluation sheets to fill out on the day of the event.
- Clipboards and pens.
Things to remember to do after the event
- Submit information on the material collected to the Great Canadian Shoreline via their website.
- Use the website to request crests to be mailed to us.
