The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup

The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is an all-Section event and is usually held in the fall (usually late September) at Sapperton Landing Park. We gather on a Monday night and go up and down Sapperton Landing collecting garbage.

The event should be registered on the The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup website with the username “newwestminsterscouting” and the password “outinscout”. Track and submit a record of what we collected, and once this is done, the free crests can be requested from the Vancouver Aquarium.

When a cleanup is done in Metro Vancouver Regional Park, a “Special Event / Use” permit is required. There is an Indemnification Agreement in the form, so it must be signed by Iqbal Lalany at the Scout office. The Vancouver Aquarium arranges insurance through the City, so Michelle Yu at the Scout office does not need to provide a copy.

We meet in front of red building (the British Columbia Penitentiary Wharf Warehouse built in 1930-31).

After the event, the Scouts walk back to Knox Church to continue their meeting. The other Sections usually simply disperse as their meeting times are usually over. Everyone should bring a water bottle, bring their own gloves, and dress for the weather.

Things to remember to do:

• Assign someone to register the event with the Great Canadian Shoreline at http://shorelinecleanup.ca
• Bring the Shoreline Cleanup evaluation sheets to fill out on the day of the event.
• Bring some small white garbage bags and a box of latex or rubber gloves. There may be some in the locker or they might need to be purchased.
  

Things to remember to do after the event:

• Submit the forms to the Great Canadian Shoreline. Upon receipt of the forms, they will send the crests to us.
